History of the ISS
The International Skeletal Society is an interdisciplinary working group concerned with skeletal disease: its pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment. The concept for the society was developed by three internationally renowned radiologists: Harold G. Jacobson, MD, Ronald O. Murray, MD, and Jack Edeiken, MD. The first meeting of the Society was held in 1972, in Washington D.C., during the Annual Meeting of the American Roentgen Ray Society. The newly formed society, with approximately 50 founding members, met for the first time in 1974. The new organization was enthusiastically received by the skeletal community, and by the 1977 meeting, membership had increased to 157, and to 261 by the twelfth annual meeting in 1985. There were 427 members from 32 countries as of October 1997, including radiologists, pathologists, orthopedic surgeons and rheumatologists. |
